RIP to the GOAT. April 16, 2019 2:15PM PT A wildly uneven but occasionally insightful drama about not-so-innocent bystanders in the orbit of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. There is much to admire but a lot to admonish in “ Run This Town, ” writer-director Ricky Tollman ’s aggressively cluttered drama about ambitious millennials, circulation-famished editors, and other not-so-innocent bystanders who cross paths in Toronto during the scandal-rocked 2010-14 mayorship of Rob Ford. It doesn’t help much that Tollman takes far too long during the rapid-fire crisscrossing of storylines throughout his movie’s first third before making it clear which individuals should be paid primary attention. And it doesn’t help at all that Mayor Ford — who looms large, literally and physically, despite his status as a supporting character — is played by a heavily latexed Damian Lewis in a less-than-convincing fat suit. Lewis so closely resembles Mike Myers’ Fat Bastard character in the “Austin Powers” franchise that it’s practically impossible to fully appreciate his spot-on portrayal of a man with an unstable id checked only sporadically by an image-conscious superego (Donald Trump, anyone? ). At the center of the untidy narrative — a liberally fictionalized version of real-life events — two young men played by very fine actors gradually emerge as morally compromised but irresistibly fascinating co-protagonists. Kamal ( Mena Massoud, soon to be seen in the title role in Disney’s live-action “Aladdin”) is an immigrant’s son who has worked his way up to a position of great responsibility, if not consistent influence, in the Ford administration. His formal job title is special assistant, but he’s better described as a human shield: It’s up to him to keep stories of Ford’s very bad behavior — sexual harassment, substance abuse, black-out-drunk episodes, etc. — from ever reaching voters and tainting the mayor’s image as a down-to-earth populist. Don’t misunderstand: Kamal isn’t exactly Ford’s soul mate; he is suitably repelled by the mayor’s improper activities, especially when his boss crudely comes on to Ashley (Nina Dobrev), an attractive co-worker who takes Kamal’s silence as an act of personal betrayal. But Kamal swallows his outrage because he thinks Ford is, on balance, doing good things for Toronto. And he knows that being associated with such a popular figure is good for his career. Bram ( Ben Platt) is the sort of entitled white male who adamantly refuses to see himself as such (for a while, at least) and has only mixed success when he does try to exploit the breaks he’s been afforded. He trades on connections to land an entry-level job at the Record, a Toronto newspaper where he hopes to make a name for himself as an investigative reporter. The bad news: Bram spends his first several months on staff writing nothing but clickbait listicles, like where to buy the best burgers in the city. The good news: Because he is such a lowly paid but highly productive drone, he’s not among the veteran writers and editors laid off during the paper’s repeated rounds of belt-tightening. The professional lives of Kamal and Bram become inextricably entwined when Bram takes a phone call intended for a recently fired reporter, and learns that somebody somewhere in Toronto may have filmed Mayor Ford smoking crack (one of several actual events Tollman didn’t have to make up). It’s the sort of bombshell that even Kamal may be unable defuse. And while Bram’s editors — played with just the right measures of cynicism and condescension by Scott Speedman and Jennifer Ehle — are initially skeptical, they ultimately provide their drone with the sizable sum demanded by the person or persons in possession of the incriminating video. As Bram departs to close the deal, Ehle’s character delivers the funniest and pithiest line in the entire movie: “Go buy us some clicks! ” All of which may make “Run This Town” sound a good deal more coherent than it actually is. Assorted other characters with their own agendas (including some cops eager to build a case against Ford) also figure into the mix, along with scenes of Kamal and Bram interacting with family members who aren’t always supportive. Tollman keeps the narrative barreling along at a brisk clip, occasionally goosing things forward with acres of split-screen images reminiscent of “The Thomas Crown Affair” and rat-tat-tat dialogue exchanges that suggest an Aaron Sorkin wannabe. It’s not always easy keeping up with this film, and there are more than a few times when it really doesn’t seem worth the effort. On the plus side, however, “Run This Town” offers some sharp observations about the struggle to provide anything like watchdog journalism in an age of diminished budgets and readership. Through the characters of Bram and (especially) Kamal, Tollman illustrates the various ways millennials — and, yes, their elders — are tempted to talk themselves into cutting corners, avoiding introspection and doing dodgy things while pursuing, if not lofty goals, at least continued employment. Veteran festival programmer, Anderson Le has teamed up with a group of Asian-American and Asian filmmakers to launch creative studio East. Its objective is hatching pan-Asian stories for a global audience. Love it. Whats the concept of "white man& 39;s burden". Burden boy. This movie left off an important is Junior. Be careful that you don't find yourself leagaly in trouble. I love them BUT you never sing portraits (the song) on your lives. Shame for one of yout best songs.

 

Love this. I just finished watching this film at the Traverse City Film Festival, I absolutely cannot rave enough about this film! the cinematography, the acting, the dialogue, everything is absolutely spot on! It is so intense that you, as the viewer, can feel the struggle that Mike Burden is going through and it just captures you and sucks you right in. especially if you know anything about the backstory on it and what really happened. To be honest this film emotionally drained me, I am literally exhausted from watching it. I would even have to go as far as to giving it 6 out of 5 stars, this is one of those do not miss movies.

Like a breath of fresh air! So so beautiful. This is a remarkable story of a man's redemption and those who made it possible through courage and love. There are elements, including the name of the central character and an ironic twist that would seem like artifacts of a writer's mind, but they were not- real people, the events that happened to them, and how they chose to respond to those events, provided a story that called out to be told. Writer/director Andrew Heckler does an amazing job telling the story and the cast is terrific.

Blue Sky is back (Now under Disney's name) with their newest animated film, it's been two years since their last film Ferdinand, which I quite enjoyed even if it wasn't great, but now they are owned by Disney, I wasn't too sure how this upcoming animated film based on a short film will make any difference since they do release some unnecessary sequels to Ice Age, but I think with this new animated film with it's all star cast, who knows. maybe Blue Sky has finally made something different and something new to offer? the short film the film is based on called "Pigeon Mission" is pretty decent as a student project, though I have seen better short films but it's pretty decent either way, well I saw the film yesterday, which is even stranger when it was released on Boxing Day. how random. anyways I saw it and. OH, MY, GOODNESS, Blue Sky has actually made a legit pretty good film and I don't mean as in eye candy or noise or just for the sake of money, no I mean a really funny, stylish, epic, creative, new and enjoyable animated feature, but it still has a few of Blue Sky's natural cliches, so let's talk about it.
Lance Sterling (Will Smith) is considered as the world's greatest spy, he's has stylish, charm, one liners and smooth moves, he can take out the bad guys just like that! however there is this even bigger villain named Killian (Ben Mandelsohn) who wants to kill every agent in the world using his M-9 droids, however with the tech geek Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) Lance will have to use a spy to avoid by a team of agents who are on the hunt for him, so. he is turned into a pigeon, he now has to get used being a pigeon until Walter makes a antidote to make Lance human again, yeeeah, this does sound quite dumb and generic, it's basically a Emperor's New Groove sort of film where our hero has to go through being a animal throughout the entire film, so you can guess how this film will end up, it has so many predicable and cliched moments that make the plot feel unoriginal, not only that but sometimes the humour can try too hard with it's toilet humour that isn't all that funny, however. with all that said, Troy Quine & Nick Bruno did put in a bit of effort with what they can do, they made the humour actually legit funny and clever, the film also makes fun of spy films in a silly but fun way, but it's also self-aware about what kind of film this is, it's also got so many action and creative scenes that there are too many to count from but they are very epic and interesting to watch, I was never bored or annoyed by it, the whole pigeon point of view for Lance is funny and amusing to see him suffer and somewhat enjoy his disguise form, making it silly but enjoyable to see, which is pretty refreshing and nice since most of Blue Sky's films are kind of all over the place and not all that funny, although it is dumb and makes no sense, the story does make up for it's unoriginal and pretty predictable plot, with it's clever parodies of other films, some self aware moments and with better heart, comedy and action, Spies in Disguise's story has a identity that can easily be recognised, but mainly thanks to it's directing and writing, the team at Blue Sky did the best they can with what they made and had fun with it.
The animation from Blue Sky is still super strong and awesome! like the plot, there is a certain style to this animation, it kind of has this Incredibles look to it by how obscure and cartoon the characters look, however that is a good thing because the characters are nicely designed and how this very cool look to them, especially Lance, Walter, Kimura, Killian and even the pigeons, it's also incredibly beautiful and the locations are very interesting, along with a lot of creative and super epic action scenes that know how to be cartoony yet stylish, when it comes to it's visual comedy, that can also get super funny and fun, lots of Walter's gadgets are pretty creative and awesome, while also being silly! also the opening title sequence is so much like a Bond film with it's choice of colour and transition, usually Blue Sky's films are quite beautiful, but with this one, this one succeeds that part but it also a fresh new style that makes this stand out from the rest of their films, it's colourful, epic, stylish, colourful, humorous and a lot of fun to watch! so I'm happy that Blue Sky's animation style has a fresh look that makes this film has a visual identity, making it one of the coolest spy films out there.
The characters are all memorable in how entertaining they are, unlike the last two Blue Sky films, they do balance the characters out decently, most of them getting the right amount of screen time, while others have fitting small roles, Lance Sterling is a pretty likeable and charming spy, he's super funny especially when he gets turned into a pigeon and trying to survive as one, I really enjoyed him and how he is portrayed, same can be said with Walter, he's pretty funny, helpful and at times can be relatable, the chemistry between the two is decent at best, it's pretty enjoyable but Sterling can be a bit unlikeable to Walter, the other characters are also fun and cool, like Killian, the big antagonist of the film who has a robo-hand, he's threatening, menacing and even has a cool design when he find out what his actual form is, i super enjoyed him, I'm glad he's not some dumb an stupid villain, he is very intelligent and villainous, Kimura (Masi Oka) is a funny and cool villain but he's not in the film for that long, Marcy (Rashida Jones) is cool and hilarious as the agent who is on the hunt for Sterling along with her two assistants Eyes (Karen Gillan) and Ears (DJ Khaled) they are not really villains as they do work for the same team as Lance, but later on. yeah you can guess the rest, the pigeons that accompany Pigeon Lance and Walter are funny silent comic reliefs who are also helpful! Lovey has a crush on Lance who hasn't got a thing for pigeons which is hilarious, Jeff is a cute big pigeon and Crazy Eyes is just bizarre and hilarious in how he will eat anything! although I'll admit sometimes a few of these characters can be a bit unless like Joy Jenkins (Reba McEntire) and Wendy Beckett (Rachel Brosnahan) who only serve as plot elements, who do may somewhat of a big comeback and a reason for our two heroes to do this journey, the voice acting is what saves these characters from being weak and forgettable, I mean I liked all of these characters, but the voice acting is really what saves these characters from being generic, Will Smith is excellent as Lance Sterling, he has that signature charming, charisma and comedy that makes him enjoyable as this spy, Tom Holland just likes Peter Parker when he is the voice of Walter, maybe if he just did his actual accident then his American accent, that would of gave his character a new identity, Ben Mendelsohn as Killian is creepy, threatening, quiet and evil, Mendelsohn sounds like he's having a blast as yet another villain, Rashida Jones always does good comedy and charm whatever character she voices like with Marcy here, Masi Oka is pretty good as Kimura who has a nice threatening voice that fits his character quite well, as for Karen Gillan and DJ Khaled as Eyes and Ears, they also good but they sound like too much like their actual voices, sometimes it can get distracting when you recognise their voices a little too often, but either way, they are still pretty good, the characters know how to be funny, memorable and charming, they can be threatening or they can sometimes mock some other well known spy characters like with Lance, Kimura and Killian, but along with some pretty solid voice acting, the characters are fun, cool and enjoyable then they have any right to be.
Theodore Sharpio's score is fantastic, it does have a very James Bond feel to it in terms of how it sounds, it is a excellent score, as for songs made for the film like "Then There Were Two. Freak of Nature" are pretty awesome and fitting songs for the movie made and sung by Mark Ronson.
Well. that was a nice surprise, a nice film to end off the 2010 decade and even the year but. this might be one of the better Blue Sky films in a long time, okay it's not quite as great as Ice Age or the Peanuts Movie, but it's better then most of the Blue Sky films out there, Spies in Disguise is a nice, refreshing, super funny and action packed film from Blue Sky, it has a engaging story with lots of comedy and action that blends well together, the animation is stylish, creative and colourful, the characters are charming and memorable, the voice acting is top notch and it has great music provided, yes it's cliched and sometimes the humour can be a little gross,if you need a film to see for the whole family, take them to see this, forget Cats and Rise of Skywalker, go see this great family film. I mean there is Jumanji: The Next Level, but this is better, well, I think Blue Sky might have a chance at making something better with their future now they are part of Disney, Spies in Disguise is a good start, so I hope for more awesome and great stuff from them! but all I ask is. PLEASE DON'T MAKE ANYMORE ICE AGE SEQUELS! please make more films like this! we need more films like this! be like Spies in Disguise, don't be like Ice Age 5.

This story  originally aired on Feb. 20, 2016. This week it appears again as a part of our Origins Show.  Sure, the slam dunk is flashy — but three-pointers win games. And to sink a three-pointer, you have to know how to jump. No one knows who first came up with the idea of jumping in the air and shooting a basketball. But the modern jump shot, the one that's still used today — the one we teach to kids — does have an inventor. And that man is not in the basketball hall of fame. At least not yet. Why? To answer that question, we have to turn back the clock 84 years. Two Brothers On A Farm The year is 1932. The location: a family farm outside Hillsdale, Wyoming. The star of our story is Kenny Sailors. He’s 12. And he idolizes his older brother, Bud, the way 12-year-olds often do. And so when Bud starts playing basketball, Kenny wants to play, too. "And, of course, we didn't have any place to play except he'd put a hoop up. A rim and no net on it, and he fixed a backboard, and we fastened it to the old wooden windmill that we had. Bud and I'd go out there and play around. And I never could get a shot off, and he really enjoyed that because he was 6-foot-5, and I was just about, I don't know, 5-foot-7 probably. He'd laugh and he'd say, 'Kenny, this isn't the game for you. It's for big men. Tall men. ' "It was out there on that packed ground and that old windmill that I figured out a way to get a shot off over that brother of mine. Dribble up to him. He couldn't stop my dribble, and I'd dribble up to him and then jump.  Boy that spooked him. He said, 'That's a good shot, Kenny. You have to get better at that. '" Kenny Sailors did get better at it. He got good enough to play for the University of Wyoming and good enough to take that team to the 1943 NCAA finals at Madison Square Garden. "People out East, had heard stories about this team from the West, and their superstar who played this kind of crazy game, " says  Shawn Fury, author of " Rise and Fire, " a book about the many men who've contributed to the jump shot. "They ended up winning the NCAA championship. And then a few days later, they played the winner of the NIT tournament, and they won that as well, so they were kinda the kings of college basketball. " There’s an old highlight reel of that game on YouTube. Thing is, even though Kenny was named the College Basketball Player of the Year, he doesn’t get a shout out on the highlight reel. A clean view of his jump shot doesn’t even make the cut. Fury explains. "Forever in basketball history, both feet were always on the ground when they took a shot. They'd have the ball with two hands and at their chest and they'd shove it forward, kind of like shoving a boat off into the lake or something. So it makes sense that a sports announcer who has watched hundreds of games but just seen set shots had never seen anyone like Kenny. So he probably didn't have the words to describe it, so he's just going to kind of gloss it over. " Jump For Don't  Announcers weren't the only ones confused by Sailors' shot. Defenders didn't know what to do either. "They would raise a hand to try to block the shot, but a lot of times they wouldn't jump, " Fury says. "You know, that's hilarious, " I say. "It seems so logical. He jumps, you jump. " "Yeah, to us, it sounds so simplistic and it sounds like something that James Naismith himself should've known in 1891, " Fury says with a laugh. "But it just wasn't, because the game for 50, 60 years had been played one way. " Kenny Sailors' first pro coach didn't want him to use the jump shot.  (AP) So let’s talk about how basketball was played back in 1943. Kenny Sailors is not the only one on that old, grainy highlights film who jumps. Players on both sides jump for rebounds, they jump for layups. On another highlight reel you can even watch a guy dribble down the court, jump in the air and fling the ball at the basket. It goes in. So what made Kenny Sailors’ jump shot different? "It looked different, " says Jud Heathcote. "No one would shoot in somebody's face, as we call it, and he did. " Heathcote would later go on to coach Magic Johnson and Michigan State to the NCAA championship. He says it's a crime that Sailors isn't in the Hall of Fame. But back in the 1940s, Heathcote was a college basketball player himself, and he saw Sailors and his jump shot at a tournament in Denver. "He would get right close, jump over them and release the ball, " Heathcote recalls. "And so this was spectacular in terms of my observation. " This is what Heathcote saw. Sailors would stop. (This is important because otherwise he’d plow into the defender — that's a foul. ) So he’d stop squared up to the basket, jump, and at the top of his jump he’d release the ball with one hand — using the other hand just as a guide. If you’re having trouble picturing it, think the Warriors' Stephen Curry. It’s pretty much the shot that’s made him — by some measures — the most dominant player in the NBA today. Got it? Now picture it in the 1940s. "So when I saw this little guy dribble right up into big guys, just jump and shoot right over them, " Heathcote says, "I was mesmerized with the jump shot. " The jump shot took Kenny Sailors to the league that would become the NBA. But when he got there, he found out that not everyone was mesmerized. "This first coach I had from — Dutch Dehnert was his name. He had that New York brogue, you know.  That — nice old guy, but he just wasn't a coach. He said to me, 'Sailors, where'd youse — 'youse' — where'd youse get that leapin' one-hander? ' That's what they called it. Leapin' one-hander. 'Oh, '  I said, 'I don't know, Dutch. ' I said, 'I've had that quite a while. ' I said, 'That's what keeps me in the game. ' He says, 'You just never make it in this league with that kind of a shot. ' He says, 'I'll show you how to shoot a good two-handed set shot. ' And he says, 'That dribble. ' He says, 'We don't dribble in this league. ' He said, 'We pass the ball up the court. '" Luckily, for both Kenny Sailors and the future success of the NBA, that coach was fired and replaced with a guy who put the ball in Sailors' hands and let him do what he wanted with it. And that worked out pretty well for Sailors and for the NBA. "I think it grew the popularity to a degree that it never would have otherwise, " Fury says. "Increased scoring a lot, in college basketball especially. You know, you used to have games in the 40s or the 50s. Now you had games in the 80s and 90s. And fans just enjoyed that more. " But what about Kenny Sailors? "Kenny's story really has been a forgotten story, " says filmmaker  Jacob Hamilton. "He disappeared for nearly 50 years after he retired from the game of basketball. " Hamilton is directing a documentary  about Kenny Sailors' life, and he provided all of the interviews with Sailors that we're using for this story. But before he started working on his film, he had the same reaction to the story as I did. "'Wait, this guy invented the jump shot? How is that possible? ' And, 'The jump shot didn't always exist? '" The Jump Shot's Legacy A few years ago, Hamilton invited Sailors out for breakfast — Sailors ate ham and eggs — and they talked about the movie they wanted to make. Sailors mentioned his time in the Marines, his 15 years as a dude rancher in Jackson Hole, his 35 years in Alaska coaching high school girls basketball and his lifetime as a devout Christian. He seemed more interested in talking about those things than he was in talking about the jump shot. "'Cause he is very humble, he is very modest and he doesn't like to take credit for it, " Hamilton says. "You just look at his life and like, 'Man, that's the way to do it. He didn't waste one second of his life. '" Kenny Sailors died on Jan. 30, 2016 — just two weeks after his 95th birthday. "You know, the thing that we feared most was that he would pass away and no one would know and he'd be forgotten, like he was before, " Hamilton says. But Sailors hasn't been forgotten. Since his death in late January, the call to include him in the Naismith Hall of Fame has only gotten louder. It was always something that seemed to matter to Sailors' friends more than it mattered to him. He'd like to say that as a lifelong Christian, he didn’t spend a lot of time worrying about such things. "You know, these halls of fame that you can get into down here that men select you to get into, they're nice up to a point. I know I belong to the greatest hall of fame that any man or woman can ever belong to. And when you belong to that and you know you belong to it, you don't worry about these halls of fame that men create down here. Don't mean that much to you. " The Naismith Hall of Fame announced its 2016 class at the NCAA Final Four in April. Sailors was not among the honorees. The veteran's committee will continue to consider his case. And should his name eventually be called, Jacob Hamilton says he knows that his friend will be smiling down on the announcement.

Somewhere, someone has been desperately hoping that Hollywood would get around to making a movie adaptation of the late-’70s TV show “ Fantasy Island. ” Meanwhile, it would seem that the rest of us — that is, the filmgoing public — are just extras in an elaborate cautionary tale designed to teach that person a lesson. The point being: Be careful what you wish for; such corny old TV series are better suited for reruns than for reboots. As suave yet sinister host Mr. Roarke warns the half-dozen expendable douchebags — er, guests — who’ve traveled to this enchanted retreat to live out their wildest dreams, “Fantasies rarely play out as you would expect. ” This one at least packs the novelty of having been reconfigured into a Blumhouse horror movie (producer Jason Blum previously delivered such low-budget, high-concept hits as “Paranormal Activity, ” “The Purge” and “Get Out”). That means a chance to explore the shadowy corners of a property originally designed to accommodate a parade of flashy guest stars, à la “The Love Boat” before it — although that show doesn’t accommodate a zombie outbreak nearly so easily. In remaking Gene Levitt’s primetime series, “ Blumhouse ’s Fantasy Island ” leans into the natural darkness of its namesake while mistakenly assuming that millennials know or care the slightest thing about it. Will they miss the character of Tattoo, played by the inimitable Hervé Villechaize? (Frankly, “imitable” would be a more appropriate word to describe Roarke’s diminutive henchman, whose trademark “Ze plane! Ze plane! ” became a popular catchphrase. ) On one hand, Blumhouse’s “Fantasy Island” seems unlikely to satisfy anyone who remembers the vintage ABC show or its short-lived 1998 revival, swapping out the weekly pleasure of watching Roarke torment the revolving cast of has-beens (TV stars like Peter Graves and Maureen McCormick found intermittent work after their hit series were canceled) for a more convoluted plot in which the island engineers a series of deadly scenarios for a bunch of shallow nobodies (over-actors like Lucy Hale, Maggie Q and Portia Doubleday). Director and co-writer Jeff Wadlow (who earned a shot at this more extravagant project after delivering Blumhouse’s “Truth or Dare” for a mere $3. 5 million) must have impressed someone with his take on the material, with its “Cabin in the Woods”-like ambitions. The finished film plays at times like an out-of-control pitch meeting, lurching from one ostensibly clever idea to the next without taking the trouble to connect the dots, or even to remain consistent with the two simple rules it sets out for itself. First, only one fantasy per person (no do-overs, unless the do-over itself happens to be your fantasy). Second, each guest must see his or her fantasy through to its natural conclusion — and they inevitably “turn twisted” after a time. That last bit of analysis comes from a wild-eyed, machete-wielding loon played by Michael Rooker, who might be trustworthy — or he might be another manifestation of the supernatural force that governs Fantasy Island. His character watches ominously from the bush as “ze plane” arrives bearing five Instagram-ready hot bodies, who look like they made a wrong turn en route to Fyre Festival. As Melanie, Hale harrumphs that there’s no signal, while high-fiving step-“bros” JD (Ryan Hansen) and Brax (Jimmy O. Yang) reek of Axe body wash. After flirting with Gwen ( Maggie Q) on the dismount, ex-cop Patrick (Austin Stowell) heads to his room and instantly removes his shirt. Cue gratuitous camera pan down to his pecs. Gwen also changes into her skivvies, getting something of a shock when she spots a creepy figure in her bathroom mirror. Whose fantasy is this, again? Oh right, yours. And if such titillation does it for you, then the ensuing assortment of cheap thrills just might suffice. For a horror remake of “Fantasy Island, ” however, the PG-13 rating doesn’t allow for much in the way of actual scares. It may be more practical to think of the movie as a hybrid of various genres, as each character’s fantasy takes the shape of a different kind of film. JD dreams of “having it all, ” so Roarke leads him and Brax to a crazy backyard bash cribbed from pothead house-party movies like “Old School” and “This Is the End” (minus anything that would have pushed the film into R-rated territory). Gwen regrets turning down a boyfriend’s marriage proposal five years earlier, so Roarke conjures a soft-focus romantic scene straight out of the Nicholas Sparks playbook. Patrick always wanted to be a soldier, so he gets to play “Platoon” alongside the hero dad he never knew. The only one who seems to be sticking to the horror genre is Melanie, who longs to get back at the girl who bullied her in high school, Sloane (Doubleday). Roarke instructs her to take the elevator to the basement of the island mansion (whose exterior does a fine job of matching the one seen on the show), where a torture-porn scenario awaits: Sloane sits strapped into a dental chair, while a diabolical surgeon (Ian Roberts) with an autopsy saw is prepared to make her pay. Again, things can only go so far within the confines of a PG-13 rating — which comes as a relief in this particular situation. It takes the characters nearly an hour to understand the idea that they’re getting to experience their fantasies. Maybe that’s because, instead of paying $50, 000 for the privilege the way they did on TV, they are all winners of a contest whose details are never divulged. Given that change, few will be surprised to learn that they’ve been assembled for the amusement (or revenge) of someone else, although the movie doesn’t explain why that person is allowed to violate the first rule of Fantasy Island. No matter. Wadlow has designed the experience like a ride, whisking audiences along quickly enough that they’re not meant to dwell on plot holes. Granted, it’s hard to predict where the plot is headed when the core premises are constantly in flux and one’s ears are ringing with Bear McCreary’s overemphatic score, although by the end, as certain characters are brought back to life and others are turned into “black-eyed zombies, ” audiences will most likely be wishing they’d bought a ticket to another movie. EXCLUSIVE: The long running ABC series Fantasy Island is being reconstituted as a feature film by Blumhouse and Sony Pictures, the latter of which controls the rights to the Aaron Spelling series which ran from 1977-84. Jeff Wadlow is directing. He just teamed with Blumhouse on Truth Or Dare, the genre film that grossed $100 million worldwide on a $5 million budget. Blumhouse will co-finance the film with Sony. Wadlow is writing with Truth or Dare co-scribes Chris Roach and Jillian Jacobs and Jason Blum is producing. Wadlow will be exec producer along with Blumhouse’s Couper Samuelson. Ryan Turek is overseeing for Blumhouse and Matt Milam for Sony. The instinct is to recall the series as being a bit cheesy, propelled by the Fantasy Island opening where Herve Villechaize’s Tattoo would beckon the island overseer Mr Roarke (Ricardo Montalban) with cries of ‘Boss, de plane, de plane. ’ But the series actually dealt with dark themes and the supernatural as visitors come to the island to live out their fantasy wishes, which puts it right in the Blumhouse wheelhouse. Wadlow previously directed Kick-Ass 2, Never Back Down and True Memoirs Of An International Assassin. For Blumhouse, this continues a lean in toward branded properties, including  Halloween which brings back Jamie Lee Curtis and John Carpenter and Glass, which springs from the Blumhouse genre hit Split with James McAvoy and provides the long anticipated sequel of M Night Shymalan’s Unbreakable with Bruce Willis and Samuel L.
