There was just one witness to the moment Kenny Sailors helped revolutionize the game of basketball — his brother, Bud — but by all accounts no one has ever doubted their story. The moment came on a hot May day in 1934. The two were tussling, one on one, under an iron rim nailed to the side of the family's windmill, a wood-shingled, big-bladed landmark that their neighbors on the Wyoming high plains recognized for miles around the way sailors of the usual kind know a lighthouse from miles out at sea. Kenny, a 13-year-old spring-legged featherweight, was dribbling this way and that on the hardpan, trying to drive to the basket, when Bud began taunting him, as older brothers will. "Let's see if you can get a shot up over me, " Bud said. A high school basketball standout, he had five years on his brother and, at that time, almost a foot in height. Kenny took the challenge, doing what people at a disadvantage often do: He improvised. He squared up, planted his feet and leaped. "I had to think of something, " he said in an interview a lifetime later. What he thought of was the jump shot, an innovation that would eventually be seen as comparable to the forward pass in football. Kenny Sailors, who spent more than 30 years in Alaska as a coach and big-game hunting guide, died at 95 on Saturday in Laramie, Wyoming. Sailors would never say flat out that he had invented the jump shot. No one can say for sure who did. The early 20th century produced enough far-flung claimants to that distinction to fill out a starting five and warm a decent-size bench — players like Glenn Roberts, Bud Palmer, Mouse Gonzalez, Jumpin' Joe Fulks, Hank Luisetti and Belus Van Smawley. But people of reliable authority have said that if you had to pick the one whose prototypical jump shot was the purest, whose mechanics set in motion a scoring technique that thrilled fans and helped transform a two-handed, flat-footed, essentially earthbound affair into the vertical game it is today, giving rise, quite literally, to marksmen like Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Rick Barry, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, it would be Sailors. Sailors developed the shot in high school, perfected it in college as a three-time All-American and was one of the few of his era to make a living off it in the professional ranks. He did so in the face of skeptics. The game back then was all about quick passing to find the open man and shooting from the chest, with two hands, feet on the floor. Watching Sailors play, a coach told him, "You gotta get yourself a good two-hand set shot, " and benched him. But Sailors, ever the freewheeler, ignored the advice, to the delight of fans in Laramie, where, as the point guard, he led the University of Wyoming Cowboys on an improbable ride to their only NCAA championship, in 1943, making the college powerhouses of the East and the big-city reporters who covered them sit up and take notice of Western basketball. If anyone can be said to have immortalized Sailors, it was Life magazine photographer Eric Schaal. He was courtside at Madison Square Garden in January 1946, when, in a game between Wyoming and Long Island University, his camera caught Sailors airborne. In the picture Sailors, in black high-tops, is suspended a full yard above the hardwood and at least that much over the outstretched hand of his hapless defender. The ball is cradled above his head, elbow at 90 degrees, his right hand poised to fling the shot with a snap of the wrist that will have it backspinning to the rim along a high arc. The photograph, appearing in one of America's widest-circulating magazines, made an impact coast to coast. "A shot whose origins could be traced to isolated pockets across the country — from the North Woods to Ozarks, from the Appalachian Mountains to the Pacific — was suddenly by virtue of one picture as widespread as the game itself, " journalist John Christgau wrote in his book "The Origins of the Jump Shot. " "Everywhere young players on basketball courts began jumping to shoot. " As the book's subtitle acknowledges — "Eight Men Who Shook the World of Basketball" — the jump shot had many fathers, all within a few years of one another, suggesting that in the long evolution of the game its time had ineluctably come. Each inventor had his own variation. Van Smawley, with his back to the basket, would corkscrew around to face the hoop before releasing the ball. Luisetti's was a running one-hander. But Christgau picked Sailors' technique as the one modern fans would recognize. "I would say that squared up toward the basket, body hanging straight, the cocked arm, the ball over the head, the knuckles at the hairline — that's today's classic jump shot, " Christgau said in an interview. "It was unblockable. " That view was echoed by Jerry Krause, research chairman of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. His own study, he told in 2015, led him to conclude that Sailors was the first player to develop and use the shot consistently. Basketball eminences have also given Sailors their vote. Joe Lapchick, former NBA star and coach, wrote in 1965, "Sailors started the one-handed jumper, which is probably the shot of the present and the future. " And Ray Meyer, the venerated coach of DePaul University, assured Sailors in a handwritten letter, "You were the first I saw with the true jump shot as we know it today. " Kenneth L. Sailors was born on Jan. 14, 1921, in Bushnell, Nebraska, (population 124), to Edward Sailors and the former Cora Belle Houtz. His mother had gone west in a covered wagon and grown up in a sod house. She gave birth to Kenny by herself. The parents divorced when the boys were young, and Ken and Bud — Barton on his birth certificate — were reared by their mother on a 320-acre farm outside Hillsdale, a stockyard town in southeastern Wyoming. An older sister, Gladys, had married and left home. The boys helped keep the farm going through the Depression, driving to Cheyenne, the state capital, to sell potatoes, bantam sweet corn and chickens. One year they raised hogs, butchered them and sold the meat door to door from a trailer hitched to an old Chevy. As they headed for school in the morning, the boys would see their mother out in the fields, and when they came home in the afternoon, they'd see her there still. The brothers' historic game of one on one remained vivid in Kenny Sailors' memory. "The good Lord must have put in my mind that if I'm going to get up over this big bum so I can shoot, I'm going to have to jump, " he said in an interview on NPR in 2008. "It probably wasn't pretty, but I got the shot off, and it went in. And, boy, Bud says: 'You'd better develop that. That's going to be a good shot. ' And I started working on it. " Bud was an All-Stater, and when he received a basketball scholarship from the University of Wyoming in Laramie, his mother sold the farm, pulled Kenny out of high school and moved there, too, opening a boardinghouse. Kenny became a champion miler and long jumper and a basketball star at Laramie High School, building leg power that would eventually give him, by his measure, a 36-inch vertical lift — an invaluable asset for a 5-foot-10 point guard. The jump shot puzzled the Laramie coach, Floyd Norman. "Where'd you get that queer shot? " Kenny Sailors recalled him asking. Sailors led the Laramie Plainsmen to a state championship and followed his brother to the University of Wyoming, also on a scholarship. (Early on he was a teammate of future sports broadcaster Curt Gowdy). He soon had sports writers groping to describe his jump shot. "A shot-put throw, " one wrote. Chester Nelson, a sports writer for The Rocky Mountain News in Colorado known as Red, wrote of Sailors in 1943: "His dribble is a sight to behold. He can leap with a mighty spring and get off that dazzling one-handed shot. Master Kenneth Sailors is one of the handiest hardwood artists ever to trod the boards. " In the 1942-43 season, under coach Everett Shelton, Sailors led the team to a 31-2 record and Wyoming's only national championship, defeating Georgetown, 46-34, at Madison Square Garden. Sailors was chosen the tournament's most outstanding player. "His ability to dribble through and around any type of defense was uncanny, just as was his electrifying one-handed shot, " The New York Times said. Wyoming was anointed the nation's best college team after it defeated St. John's University, the National Invitation Tournament champion, 52-47, in overtime in a Red Cross fundraising exhibition at the Garden on April 1, 1943. "The dynamic Ken Sailors, " as The Times put it, led the way again. That year he married Marilynne Corbin, a cheerleader nicknamed Bokie, then enlisted in the Marines and served in the South Pacific, where Bud was flying B-25 bombers. Discharged in 1945 with a Bronze Star and captain's bars, Kenny Sailors, with a year of eligibility left, rejoined the Wyoming team midseason and led it to a 22-4 record, earning his third All-America honor and a contract with the Cleveland Rebels of the Basketball Association of America. The jump shot was still alien to the pros, and the Rebels' coach, Dutch Dehnert, was skeptical. "You'll never go in this league with that shot, " he told Sailors before benching him. But Dehnert was soon gone in a coaching change and Sailors, with his jump shot, returned to the lineup. He was named a second-team All-Pro in his rookie season. Professional stardom eluded him, though. In three seasons in the BAA and two in its successor, the National Basketball Association, he played mostly on losing teams, like the Providence Steamrollers in Rhode Island (where he signed an endorsement deal with Bennett's Prune Juice, receiving all-you-can-drink cases of it as a bonus). He led the original Denver Nuggets in scoring one year, exploded for 37 points in a game with the Baltimore Bullets, and finished with the Boston Celtics, retiring from professional basketball at 30. Sailors later bought a dude ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. A Republican, he served a term in the Wyoming Legislature and lost two bids for the House of Representatives and another for the Senate. With their children grown, Sailors and his wife sold the ranch to his brother in 1965, packed up and drove to Alaska, living at first in an Airstream trailer. They stayed for more than 30 years, moving to a log cabin in Gakona, overlooking the Copper River, and then to Angoon on Admiralty Island. Sailors led hunting and fishing expeditions, coached youth and high school basketball and taught high school history. After Marilynne Sailors developed Alzheimer's disease, the couple moved to Idaho, following their daughter Linda, who had married. Marilynne died in 2002 after 59 years of marriage, after which Sailors moved back to Laramie and settled near the university as a living campus legend. Plans were afoot to erect a statue of him at the basketball arena's entrance. To the disappointment of his fans, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, has never inducted him. But the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame did, in 2012, in a class that included Patrick Ewing, Earl Monroe and Willis Reed. Sailors joined his coach Everett Shelton among the enshrined. Days afterward, the University of Wyoming honored Sailors with a halftime ceremony during a game against Colorado. Overhead was a familiar sight, a Gulliver-size Cowboys jersey hanging from the roof, its downy white trimmed in brown and gold and bearing Sailors' name and number, 4. It remains the only jersey suspended there, high above the court. Correction: An earlier version of this story inaccurately called Sailors a former Glennallen resident. He coached in Glennallen? but lived in Gakona.

Mom: So Honey, how did your gunpowder plot go? Me: V: 14:00. Movie Watch Pari no. I'm playing the saxophone part in the kmea all state orchestra and I'm looking forward to it now that i listened to this haha. The piccolo part is insane and I hate him for that, but I also love him. Gene Kelly is Jerry, an "American in Paris" in this 1951 film directed by Vincente Minnelli and also starring Leslie Caron, Oscar Levant, Nina Foch and Georges Guetary. Jerry is one of Paris' many starving artists though he's a happy one, in a neighborhood where he knows everyone and has formed many friendships with fellow artists. Then he is "discovered" by an older patron (Nina Foch) who wants him for more than his art. Jerry, however, has fallen in love with his friend Henri's (Guetary) girl Lise (Caron) though he doesn't realize that she is involved with Henri. Lise falls for Jerry, too, but feels a strong commitment to Henri. The beauty of Paris begins to fade.
This is a beautifully directed film photographed in color, and some of it is really eye-popping. With Kelly and Caron as the leads, there is lots of great dancing to the Gershwin tunes, with Kelly at his exuberant, athletic best and Caron, introduced in this film, shown dancing a variety of styles from sexy to sublime. Levant is there with his dry quips and wonderful concertizing on the piano, and Guetary, an exciting singer, performs "Stairway to Paradise" and gives out with some great high notes in "By Strauss." As the glamorous, lonely patron, Nina Foch is excellent, managing to evoke sympathy in a normally unsympathetic role.
Reading through some of the comments on the board, I find them disturbing. "An American in Paris" is a vibrant, colorful musical with magnificent dancing and songs that capture the way of life everyone believes exists in France - the romance, the cafés, the fun of poverty and the beauty of the city of Paris itself. It isn't Ibsen. It isn't meant to be realistic; it is meant to be charming, and in that, it succeeds. It doesn't need a script like The Grapes of Wrath; it needs a script to get from song to song and give us feeling for the characters, and in that, it succeeds. There is a complaint that Jerry's interest in Lise is shallow. In film noir, a woman and a man's eyes meet, and they're instantly joined at the hip, and we accept it. We can't accept in a musical that Jerry saw Lise and fell for her? My suggestion? Take a film on the level it's presented and don't try to make it something it's not. So often on this board, people complain that a film didn't do this and didn't do that when it was never supposed to do this or that. Maybe it was supposed to do just one thing - entertain. And in that, American in Paris" succeeds as well or better than just about anything else.

Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2018 Format: Blu-ray Verified Purchase The immortal Gene Kelly, the exquisite Leslie Caron, the sophisticated Nina Foch, the cranky Oscar Levant, the music of George Gershwin, the screenplay by Jay Lerner, and the direction of Vincente Minnelli. Connect all those sublime elements and you have a magical production that is far greater than the sum of its magnificent parts. This movie will always be a favorite of people who love life and see it as a beautiful dream choreographed by their heart's desires. (If this review was helpful in any way, please click on the "Helpful" key below, or write a comment. Thanks). Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2017 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase A fabulous fabulous movie. Timeless! A must for anyone likes classic film and musicals. If you were going to compare it to the current Broadway musical, do not, it's like comparing apples and oranges. Both are magnificent but different in many ways. I'm a huge fan of Gene Kelly. His masculinity and spectacular tap dancing are complement so well with Leslie Caron's Classic ballet Point. His dance with the little French children "I've got rhythm" is an unforgettable simply joyful scene. Oscar Levant is dream made in heaven with his sardonic comic humor, and one of the most extraordinary concert pianists of that era. It is worth it just to see and hear him play. Pure magic for young and old. I would give it 10 stars if it were possible. Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2019 Format: Blu-ray Verified Purchase I don't know what went wrong where, but this transfer is kind of a joke. Anyone who has seen a real dye transfer Technicolor print of this film will know what. The color is ugly here - it should be vibrant and beautiful. Nothing is as sharp as it should be. I wish Warner Archive would do this and Gigi over again, and perhaps On the Town while they're at it. The movie itself is mostly a wondrous thing. Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2018 Format: DVD Verified Purchase I saw this movie when it first came out in the 1950's, and have seen it several times since. It certainly hasn't lost its charm, and that's why I bought it. Almost everything in it is perfect - Gershwin's music, Gene Kelly's dancing and pretty good singing, and then there is the dancing and charm of a very young Leslie Caron, in what was, I believe, her first movie appearance. But, leaving the best 'til last, there is the dancing and splendor of the 'American in Paris' scene. I am no connoisseur of ballet, but I don't think one has to be to take in and enjoy both the magnificent setting and the music and dancing involved. If you like music, dancing, and real talent, you will not want to pass up this opportunity. Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2016 Format: DVD Verified Purchase I absolutely LOVE this movie. But this DVD has audio problems that make it unwatchable. The dialog is so quiet that you have to turn the volume up to 100% - and then when a song begins (and it's a musical, there's a song every few minutes! ) it's crashingly, painfully loud, so must turn audio down swiftly. It's incredibly distracting to watch a movie with your thumb constantly at the ready to hit the volume up / down. I'm guessing these DVDs were seconds / problematic at factory, and that's why it was so cheap. You sometimes really do get what you pay for. :( Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2016 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase I have always enjoyed musicals, whether movies or live stage productions. I'm totally enthralled once the singing and dancing begins. But, with the success of An American in Paris on Broadway, I had to revisit this old movie; I was a seven year old when I last saw. The dialogue and visuals might seem a little hokey by today's standards, but Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron's dancing is second to none. I loved the movie from beginning to end, and I do recommend this old gem to all who have an interest in amazing dance. Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2008 Format: DVD Verified Purchase Warner Brothers' proprietary Ultra-Resolution process has brought new life to such classics as "The Wizard of Oz, " "Gone With the Wind, " Errol Flynn's "Robin Hood, " and "Singin' in the Rain. " By going back to the original three-strip technicolor negatives and realigning them digitally, the color and detail blows away anything that customers have seen in the past with home video. "An American In Paris" has now undergone the same process. For those that have a blu-ray player, be sure to order this version, An American in Paris [Blu-ray]. A dynamic history of the making of the film, which reveals how George and Ira Gershwin's classic songs, the dazzling art of the French impressionists and the ultimate teamwork of MGM's legendary "Freed Unit" came together to create a musical masterpiece. Featuring ten new interviews, including co-stars Leslie Caron, Nina Foch, and Kelly's widow. A very enlightening piece; Caron's memories are probably the most interesting, with Foch running a close 2nd. Caron's comments about co-star Georges Guétary being handsome but not too bright seem to be echoed by Kelly's widow, who says Gene spent more time trying to teach him how to gracefully walk down a set of steps than on anything else in the film. It is unfortunate that Maurice Chevalier could not have taken that role as originally intended. You also realize just how revolutionary this movie was (artistically), especially because of the 17-minute ballet tacked on at the end of the movie. Even Irving Berlin disapproved during an on-set visit, which didn't help the confidence of Vincente Minnelli at all. Outtakes: Georges Guetary performing Love Walked In (not missed in the movie at all! ) Audio Outtakes: Alternate Main Title, But Not for Me (Guetary), But Not for Me (Levant Piano Solo), Gershwin Prelude #3, I've Got a Crush on You, Nice Work if You Can Get It, 'S Wonderful Radio Interviews: Johnny Green, Gene Kelly, Gene Kelly & Leslie Caron; Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron promotional radio interview with Dick Simmons Not all of the original musical recording stems have survived over the years, preventing a true stereo/5. 1 restoration of the soundtrack; instead, a restored mono version is being made available. Most are familiar with the movie; storywise, it is a little creaky and hasn't necessarily survived well over the years: Kelly is an American artist living in Paris. He falls in love with a young girl (Leslie Caron) who is in a loveless relationship with one of his best friends (Guétary). Kelly is also in somewhat of a loveless relationship with his financial sponsor (Nina Foch). You can probably guess the rest. The glowing color, fantastic music by Gershwin (arrangements by the talented Conrad Salinger), and the amazing choreography of Gene Kelly will keep this one a classic for years to come despite a predictable plot. Just the ending ballet alone is a masterpiece; the art of Toulouse Lautrec and Utrillo comes to life with Gene Kelly & Leslie Caron dancing their hearts out to some of the most imaginative choreography (Kelly's) in years. The Freed Unit at MGM was at their peak when this movie was made, and this is one of the last great ones that it created. It is a real shame that with how fantastic the picture is (the colors literally leap off the screen, and it really adds to the appreciation of what an artistically beautiful visual feast this movie is) that the sound cannot match. Although it is clear and free of problems, the Gershwin music just begs for a 5. 1 or 7. 1 surround track; unfortunately, due to the age and availability of the original elements, this is not possible. Top international reviews 5. 0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Watch for Those That Enjoy Musicals Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 30, 2015 Verified Purchase This was made in 1951, two years before I was born; this is the first time that I had seen it! It cost a fortune back then to make it - 2. 7 million dollars; they needn’t have worried, at the last count the studio had made 1. 3 billion! It won numerous gongs for its choreography and costume and direction. I felt that the lead players in the cast also deserved an Oscar, especially ‘perpetual motion, ’ Gene Kelly, and the charming Leslie Caron, whom I thought a total delight to look at and watch? Add Gershwin’s music into the mix and this just couldn’t fail. The direction by Vincente Minnelli (Liza’s dad) produced a superb spectacle. I bought the plain DVD version (not the Bluray) but I have to say that the picture quality and colour is just amazing for a film of that age. The final dance / ballet scenes are rather long at 16 minutes but it is a wonderful finale, apparently those scenes alone cost a half a million dollars to make! I thoroughly enjoyed the film and as the saying goes – they certainly don’t make um’ like that anymore? 3 people found this helpful Sending feedback... Thank you for your feedback. Gene Kelly served as the film's principal star, singer, athletically-exuberant dancer and energetic choreographer and he even directed the sequence surrounding "Embraceable You. " The entire film glorifies the joie de vivre of Paris, but it was shot on M-G-M's sound stages in California, except for a few opening, establishing shots of the scenic city. Nonetheless, it remains one of the most optimistic American films of the post-war period, with Paris at its centre. If you've heard of `An American in Paris, ' then you already know that it's one of the top musicals ever made and one of the artistic high points in the history of the M-G-M studio. In the production unit of Arthur Freed, M-G-M bankrolled a concentration of musical and dancing talent that no smaller organisation could possibly have put together; it's one of the truly persuasive arguments in favour of the old studio system. Inspired by the music of George and Ira Gershwin, Arthur Freed put his most creative talent into this one entertainment. The ambitious Vincente Minnelli was a meticulous design-oriented director, while the energetic star and choreographer Gene Kelly was hooked on the idea of blending dance and cinema into new, unseen forms. One of the film's highlights is its impressive finale - an ambitious, colourful, imaginative, 13 minute avant-garde "dream ballet" costing a half million dollars to produce. The pretentious sequence, featuring an Impressionistic period daydream in the style of various painters, is one of the longest uninterrupted dance sequences of any Hollywood film, and features the music of George Gershwin. Gene Kelly and John Alton collaborated in presenting a totally remarkable marathon musical and dance number that was the first for both of them to work in Technicolor. Hollywood attempts at artistic achievement have often been met with indifference, even when they succeed. Film historians point to the "cinematic" ballet in Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's `The Red Shoes' as an important precedent; many dance critics had little use for it as well. Hollywood films were expected to be escapism first and art "maybe;" Vincente Minnelli and Arthur Freed took a big risk with their consciously "arty" ballet finale. That America accepted and celebrated `An American in Paris' perhaps marks the highpoint of post-war optimism, a time just before the anxieties of those years claimed a big piece of the culture. Alan Jay Lerner's script is as simple as any of M-G-M's formula musicals. Ex-GI Jerry Mulligan [Gene Kelly] tries to become a painter in an idealised post-war Paris that still loves Americans. He lives in the same building as Adam Cook [Oscar Levant], a pianist-slacker who lives from fellowship to fellowship grant. Mulligan meets two women on the same day. Well-heeled Baltimore divorcée Milo Roberts [Nina Foch] offers to sponsor Jerry's art, but is really looking for a new man to keep. Jerry's eye instead goes to the young Parisian Lise Bouvier [Leslie Caron]. He falls in love almost immediately. The problem is that Lise is engaged to successful singer Henri Baurel [Georges Guétary], a close associate of Adam. Jerry Mulligan's Yankee sense of humour helps win Lise's heart, but she feels too indebted to Henri to let him down. A strong story is often irrelevant to a classic M-G-M musical. The important factors are the music, the talent and the treatment of the musical numbers. Paris glides from one jubilant George Gershwin winner to the next, none of which repeat a mood. Jerry, Adam and Henri celebrate friendship with "By Strauss" and dancing with the fat barmaid and an ancient, but cheerful lady bystander. Jerry has fun playing with the neighbourhood kids with the song "I Got Rhythm;" the kids seem genuinely amused. Georges Guétary belts out a flashy Follies Bergére type song called "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise", while the egotistical Adam daydreams of triumph as a concert pianist performing "Concerto in F for Piano and Orchestra. " Jerry and Lise's key romantic tune is "Our Love is Here to Stay. " `An American in Paris' is a beloved title and many fans appreciate its artistry. Most of the other top M-G-M musicals display a broader streak of comedy, and the supposed 'best musical of all time 'Singin' in the Rain' is wittier, more complex and even has relevance as an account of Hollywood history. Oscar Levant's forced cynicism plays against the mood, as the show never makes a full statement about artistic vagabonds. The sentiment and heart in Paris is really a fusion between the personalities and the music. Leslie Caron's perky smile and laugh are winning but she seems truly heartbroken only when backed by Gershwin. It's less a variety musical than a romantic fusion. Gene Kelly's performance in the big `An American in Paris Ballet' integrates dance and music so closely together that he seems to personify the spirit of George Gershwin. Busby Berkeley and to some extent Michael Powell's big dance extravaganzas made the camera an active participant in the flow of music and dance, but Kelly's choreography unites music, dance camera and performance into a seemingly living entity. Add to that John Alton's intense colour lighting (with difficult, choreographed lighting changes) and the Ballet may be the most complicated dance ever put on film. It's an almost perfect collaboration. Vincente Minnelli's spectacular design motifs here are in much better balance. The ballet progresses through a parade of classic painting styles that mimic artists like Utrillo, Renoir and Van Gogh. Perhaps the best compliment for the Ballet is that it does full justice to George Gershwin. The music stands alone as a supremely emotional experience, and the Ballet only heightens it. There's none of the oddball mismatches of music and visuals that one remembers from certain segments in Fantasia. `An American in Paris' is Hollywood filmmaking worthy of superlatives. Blu-ray Video Quality – The video quality on this Blu-ray release is in a full 1080p encoded image in the 1. 33:1 aspect ratio. The first thing that will catch your eye with this release obviously, is that residual 1950′s Technicolor looks. Perhaps it was the intention, but I do have to say at several points in the film the colour palette goes from harsh to seriously intense, not by any means "popping" off the screen in a pleasing manner. Now, don't get me wrong, scenes doused in neutrals from the wardrobe to the set design actually look very nice, though there is still the subject of the flesh tones existent. The flesh tones harbour the most blush-esque of bright orange hues, and this look continues through the entire film, fluctuating in that Technicolor way you've seen on other elder classics, as an actor moves across the screen passing the horizontal flickers all shades of the palette alternate in tones. The blaring colour palette is heightened by the definite solid black level; so solid, some scenes in which actors are clothed in an abundance of black actually gives them an appearance of animation. This solid black level may be dead on, but it tends to bring out the hard-core saturation, which is often bleeding with more bold hues, creating a near glare at the presence of such vividness, and more importantly, taking away the presence of detail. The late Gene Kelly had an extremely expressive face, and though it needs to be understood that this film has endured some aging, much of the detail of facial features is absent; this quality also applies to all other visual definition aspects of the film, from the costumes, to the set design as well. A good example of this is at the runtime of about 32 minutes and 20 seconds, where Milo is wearing an open back dress, and the scene involves some shots from behind her. Where we would normally see the contours of the shoulder blades, the bleeding/pixilation and harsh colour saturation make the visible flesh tone of her back appear as one smooth piece. Overall, you have to give credit where it is due, and it is evident that this release is what it is with special efforts, as are most classic catalogue titles that have made their way to Blu-ray recently. Keep in mind that when you see this film on Blu-ray what you are seeing was created by filmmakers over 50 years ago, and through so many different processes, this will be the best presentation you can own at this time. Purists will also surely be proud, as this release hasn't gone through significant changes, still possessing many qualities that will keep it in a very original form. Though, when comparing a film from this era to others of the genre that have made their way to Blu-ray. Blu-ray Audio Quality – The audio quality on this release is presented in 1. 0 Dolby Digital Mono. It was a great choice on behalf of Warner Bros. to stick with the original mono track for this films Blu-ray release, providing a more sincere, and realistic experience connecting to a time long past, not to mention the film's content that is present would have made for a label of "overkill" if a more voluminous track had been included. There are just a few issues that occur on this audio track though. Occasionally, there is hissing present, usually during a pause in a musical number. Also, at least 2 to 3 times during the abundance of tap dancing that occurs throughout the film, the sounds of "tapping" are out of sync with what we see happening visually. On a more positive note, all of the vocals are carried out nicely, and shouts and emphasized vocals have a bit of an acoustic quality. Overall, this audio track suits the film in a justifying manner. Blu-ray Special Features and Extras: Audio Commentary: Commentary by Patricia Ward Kelly: Featuring rare, often previously unheard interviews with Gene Kelly, Vincente Minnelli, Arthur Freed, Alan Jay Lerner, Johnny Green, Saul Chaplin, Michael Feinstein, Preston Ames, and Irene Sharaff and new observations by Leslie Caron and Nina Foch: A patchwork track hosted by Patricia Ward Kelly that features rare interview segments with director Vincente Minnelli, stars Gene Kelly, Nina Foch, and Leslie Caron, and other key members of the cast and crew like producer Arthur Freed, screenwriter Alan Jay Lerner, co-musical directors Johnny Green and Saul Chaplin, musician Michael Feinstein, art director Preston Ames, and costume designer Irene Sharaff. The nature of the commentary makes for an uneven listen, but the enormity of the interviews on hand allows for the participants to cover the gamut of the production and for the disc's producers to be selective about the quality of all the information therein. Special Feature: 'S Wonderful: The Making of An American in Paris [2008] [1080p] [42:00] This documentary features new interviews, including Leslie Caron and Nina Foch. This recently produced behind-the-scenes documentary digs into George Gershwin's original work, the genesis of the cinematic adaptation, casting, the shoot, and the eventual reception of the film. Special Feature: American Masters: Gene Kelly: Anatomy of a Dancer [2002] [89:00] This PBS documentary from the American Masters series focuses on Gene Kelly, his career, and his contributions to the film and its genre. It looks in detail at the life, the work, and the contributions of Gene Kelly to movies and movie making. The film celebrates Kelly's putting story-telling into dance and discovering, along with Martha Graham and Jerome Robbins, an American style. It examines his partnership with Stanley Dolan, his bringing of tap and ballet into musicals, his marriages and personal competitiveness, his political views, and his work on stage as well as in film. This production details his contributions as a dancer, choreographer, and director. The narration and talking heads also discuss his muscular style, his low centre of gravity, and his masculine appeal. Special Feature: Vintage James FitzPatrick Traveltalks Short: Paris on Parade [9:00] A vintage musical segment from James FitzPatrick Traveltalks that focuses on a 1937 The Paris Exhibition. The Paris Exposition is seen as one of the most important events to take place in 1937 if only because it brought together forty-four nations side-by-side in goodwill. The Expo took place along the banks of the Seine, using many existing landmarks. Each national pavilion was provided and designed by the country in question, symbolizing some important aspect of that country. Pavilions of French colonies were also well represented. Lighter fare at the Expo included demonstrations of water skiing on the Seine, performances of cultural dances native to specific countries, and the on-going spectacle of the Fountain of Peace located at the base of the Eiffel Tower. Special Feature: Classic Cartoon: Symphony in Slang [1951] [7:00] `Symphony in Slang' is a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoon short directed by Tex Avery and written by Rich Hogan. It tells the story of a man John Brown, who finds himself at the Pearly Gates explaining the story of his life to a bewildered Saint Peter and Noah Webster using slang of that era. The majority of the short is made up of sight gags based on Peter and Webster's imagined, literal understandings of such phrases as "I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth" and "Outside it was raining cats and dogs. " Special Feature: Love Walked In [1951] [3:00] A musical outtake song sequence featuring Georges Guétary and Oscar Levant. Special Feature: Audio-only bonuses: Outtake songs gallery and Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron and Johnny Green radio promos [14:00] A trio of interviews with Gene Kelly, Johnny Green, and a conversational chat with Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. Theatrical Trailer [1951] [4:00] [1080p] Finally, one of the high points of the M-G-M musical, `An American in Paris' makes a welcome entry into the annals of high definition in this marvellous looking Blu-ray release with a host of bonuses that make the package a must-see and for many a must-own. Warner Brothers used their patented ultra-resolution process to bring this film back to life. That means they went back to the original 3 strip Technicolor negatives and realigned them digitally. As a result, the colour and detail is unlike anything we have seen before on home video. In the dance number, where Leslie Caron takes on different personalities using different dances and colours, you will not believe the quality of colour. It really was amazingly, absolutely beautiful. If you have a Blu-ray player, make sure to choose this Blu-ray version of this film as you will experience something truly special and that is why it has gone pride of place in my ever increasing Gene Kelly Blu-ray Collection. I am delighted the girl in the movie is Leslie Caron since she dances well so can dance with Kelly rather than him needing a stand-in dancer for the "ballet sequence" - a problem which for me was the only flaw in his best musical Singin' in the Rain. Kelly is of course a struggling artist in Paris, where else, so plenty of Parisian type hints and French-ish accents etc. Always worth watching. He is discovered by wealthy Milo Roberts (Nina Foch), who becomes Jerry's patroness in more ways than one. Meanwhile, Jerry plays hookey on this setup by romancing waif-like Lise Bouvier (Leslie Caron) -- who, unbeknownst to him, is the object of the affections of his close friend Henri (Georges Guetary), a popular nightclub performer. (The film was supposed to make Guetary into "the New Chevalier. " Highlights include Guetary's rendition of "Stairway to Paradise"; Oscar Levant's fantasy of conducting and performing Gershwin's "Concerto in F" (Levant also appears as every member of the orchestra); and the closing 17-minute "American in Paris" ballet, in which Kelly and Caron dance before lavish backgrounds based on the works of famed French artists. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Rating: G Genre: Directed By: Written By: In Theaters: Oct 4, 1951 wide On Disc/Streaming: Apr 27, 1999 Runtime: 115 minutes Studio: MGM Cast Critic Reviews for An American in Paris Audience Reviews for An American in Paris An American in Paris Quotes Movie & TV guides.

Thank you for the video. Much more detailed than the ones Japanese media have to offer. The rain halted and a rainbow appeared just when the emperor made the announcement. What a miracle! Besides, on that day (Oct. 23) Mt. Fuji was capped with snow for the first time this year. Another miracle.

Critics Consensus Despite a typically strong performance from Tommy Lee Jones, Emperor does little with its fascinating historical palate, and is instead bogged down in a cliched romantic subplot. 32% TOMATOMETER Total Count: 91 45% Audience Score User Ratings: 7, 407 Emperor Ratings & Reviews Explanation Emperor Photos Movie Info Matthew Fox (WORLD WAR Z, I, ALEX CROSS, "Lost") joins with Academy Award (R) winner Tommy Lee Jones (LINCOLN, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, THE FUGITIVE, HOPE SPRINGS), newcomer Eriko Hatsune and award-winning Japanese star Toshiyuki Nishida (GET UP!, TSURIBAKA NISSHI 14, TSURIBAKA NISSHI 6, GAKKO, DUN-HUANG) to bring to life the American occupation of Japan in the perilous and unpredictable days just after Emperor Hirohito's World War II surrender. As General Douglas MacArthur (Jones) suddenly finds himself the de facto ruler of a foreign nation, he assigns an expert in Japanese culture - and psychological warfare - General Bonner Fellers (Fox), to covertly investigate the looming question hanging over the country: should the Japanese Emperor, worshiped by his people but accused of war crimes, be punished or saved? Caught between the high-wire political intrigue of his urgent mission and his own impassioned search for the mysterious school teacher (Hatsune) who first drew him to Japan, Fellers can be certain only that the tricky subterfuge about to play out will forever change the history of two nations and his heart. As a dedicated vegetarian, these kind of movies are hilarious. Those craving for meat are indeed screwed up in the head.
No, seriously, this movie was fun to watch. I'm aware this is a remake and I haven't seen the original. I do however enjoy the work of the Soska sisters and wanted to see how they pull this one off. As I expected, they did a solid job. Not a masterpiece but certainly a far better movie than many more famous horror movies that are currently box office hits. Now I have a rabid craving for some vegetarian dish.

Was anyone else lost or was it just me. Last time I was this early, The Texans were up 24-0. I put achol in my pumpkins and had a squirrel fall out of a tree onto my head. | Simon Abrams December 13, 2019 “Rabid” definitely feels like a remake of a 1977 horror cheapy directed by a young David Cronenberg. Co-writer/director team Jen and Sylvia Soska, with the help of co-writer John Serge, have only superficially updated Cronenberg’s “Rabid, ” a B-movie about the dehumanizing effects of a vampire-like epidemic. The Soskas’ revamped “Rabid” is still worth seeing because they have a wickedly funny sense of humor, and a few winningly nasty ideas about how their obsessive characters would only grow more selfish during a crisis. But: the best parts of “Rabid” are often overshadowed by tired jokes about the cut-throat fashion industry (the movie’s heroine is a wannabe clothing designer), and the predatory nature of self-styled artists. There are a lot of promising ideas here, but none are developed so much that this remake feels essential. Advertisement “Rabid” begins with the first of a few endearing, but forgettable tributes to Cronenberg’s movies: a motorcycle almost spins out of control, like it does at the beginning of the original 1977 “Rabid. ” The motorcycle is driven by Rose ( Laura Vandervoort), a scarred fashion designer who’s initially defined by how defensive she feels at work (ex: she’s a vegetarian, eek! ). Rose feels singled out by her blowhard boss Gunter ( Mackenzie Gray), a stereotypically oily Euro-trash aesthete who would fit right into “ Zoolander. ” Rose is also mocked by her peers, like Bev and Ellie (the Soskas), who pick on the blemish covering Rose’s forehead (“ Scarface ”) whenever they’re not snorting cocaine or physically bumping Rose out of the way in their haste to enter a popular Canadian night club. “Rabid” isn’t a period piece, though it sometimes feels like one. Soon enough, Rose inadvertently succeeds at getting into a motorcycle accident, leaving her horribly maimed; her jaw is wired shut, and some of her intestines have been ripped out. Rose’s recovery is sped up considerably by aspiring model and BFF Chelsea ( Hanneke Talbot), as well as some radical reconstructive surgery from Dr. William Burroughs ( Ted Atherton). But, while Rose is now turning heads—including Gunter, who gives her a rare opportunity to develop her clothing designs for his “Schadenfreude” collection—she’s also ripping out the jugulars of insecure alpha predators like night-club brute Billy (CM Punk) or narcissist soap opera star Dominic ( Stephen Huszar). Because Rose, like Chambers’s character in the original “Rabid, ” has contracted a weird strain of vampire-like bloodlust, an association that’s spelled out in the scene where Dr. Burroughs listens to the other William Burroughs read a passage about vampires in his spoken-word piece, “Advice for Young People. ” That allusion is a bit too blunt to be clever, but it is kind of charming as a side-long tribute to Cronenberg’s own “ Naked Lunch ” adaptation. Less thrilling: heavy-handed dialogue that’s neither provocative nor cruel enough to be effective as sandwich-board speechifying. Gunter’s dialogue is especially bad, though Gray puts an appropriately loopy, Udo Kier-esque spin on lines like, "I do not mean to die for fashion, but this fashion is to die for, mmm. ” Other declarative statements are not as easily salvaged, like when Rose tells hunky, pure-hearted photographer love interest Brad Hart ( Benjamin Hollingsworth) that “I just love the way that the clothes make me feel. You can literally be anybody, become any thing. It's like armor: when you walk out the door, you're arming yourself. " His response—“For me, true beauty lies in the things we have yet to uncover”—wouldn’t be so unfortunate if the Soskas viciously laid into him more later on (or her, for that matter). There are a number of dark, and grimly funny ideas in the Soskas’ “Rabid, ” but their vision isn’t strong enough to tie them all together. Rose and Beverly’s relationship is especially under-developed, which robs a climactic moment of its slam-the-brakes power. The movie’s irruptive sense of gross-out humor also never really seems fitting given the goofy targets of the Soskas’ derision. One minute the characters are struggling to explain—at length—how they’re feeling, and then the next minute, there’s a monstrous appendage coming out of Rose’s head (weirdly reminiscent of a certain infamous Jamaa Fanaka movie). I wanted more where that came from, or maybe a more thoughtful gutting of the hand-me-down tropes that Cronenberg previously attacked. But the Soskas’ signature fascination with transhumanism and body modification doesn’t travel very far here (then again, it doesn’t go far in Cronenberg’s “Rabid, ” either). The Soskas’ are, however, smart to play up the melodramatic elements of Rose’s story, so that she’s more like Carrie White (Cronenberg originally hoped to cast Sissy Spacek because of her performance in “Carrie”), just as they consummately play up Dr. Burroughs’s Frankensteinian ambition as a riff on the blinding hubris that motivates Oliver Reed ’s Hal Raglan in Cronenberg’s “ The Brood. ” But, while “Rabid” is a faithful homage, it doesn’t hang together the way it should. Looks good want to go see it🤔. Boris- san. To everyone here who doesn't know better: That weird strained yowling the smaller dog is making is often a sign of rabies. Rabies paralyzes the vocal chords, causing this unusual sound. Paired with it's sickly look and odd behavior, this animal may have rabies. Considering this channel is an animal clinic, I don't think they would lie about a dog being rabid either. Use your brains, and do your research please.

Rabies A dog with rabies in the paralytic (post-furious) stage Specialty Infectious disease Symptoms Fever, fear of water, confusion, excessive salivation, hallucinations, trouble sleeping, paralysis, coma [1] [2] Causes Rabies virus, Australian bat lyssavirus [3] Prevention Rabies vaccine, animal control, rabies immunoglobulin [1] Prognosis Nearly always death if symptoms start to manifest [1] Deaths 17, 400 (2015) [4] Rabies is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the brain in humans and other mammals. [1] Early symptoms can include fever and tingling at the site of exposure. [1] These symptoms are followed by one or more of the following symptoms: violent movements, uncontrolled excitement, fear of water, an inability to move parts of the body, confusion, and loss of consciousness. [1] Once symptoms appear, the result is nearly always death. [1] The time period between contracting the disease and the start of symptoms is usually one to three months, but can vary from less than one week to more than one year. [1] The time depends on the distance the virus must travel along peripheral nerves to reach the central nervous system. [5] Rabies is caused by lyssaviruses, including the rabies virus and Australian bat lyssavirus. [3] It is spread when an infected animal bites or scratches a human or other animal. [1] Saliva from an infected animal can also transmit rabies if the saliva comes into contact with the eyes, mouth, or nose. [1] Globally, dogs are the most common animal involved. [1] In countries where dogs commonly have the disease, more than 99% of rabies cases are the direct result of dog bites. [6] In the Americas, bat bites are the most common source of rabies infections in humans, and less than 5% of cases are from dogs. [1] [6] Rodents are very rarely infected with rabies. [6] The disease can be diagnosed only after the start of symptoms. [1] Animal control and vaccination programs have decreased the risk of rabies from dogs in a number of regions of the world. [1] Immunizing people before they are exposed is recommended for those at high risk, including those who work with bats or who spend prolonged periods in areas of the world where rabies is common. [1] In people who have been exposed to rabies, the rabies vaccine and sometimes rabies immunoglobulin are effective in preventing the disease if the person receives the treatment before the start of rabies symptoms. [1] Washing bites and scratches for 15 minutes with soap and water, povidone-iodine, or detergent may reduce the number of viral particles and may be somewhat effective at preventing transmission. [1] [7] As of 2016, only fourteen people had survived a rabies infection after showing symptoms. [8] [9] [10] Rabies caused about 17, 400 human deaths worldwide in 2015. [4] More than 95% of human deaths from rabies occur in Africa and Asia. [1] About 40% of deaths occur in children under the age of 15. [11] Rabies is present in more than 150 countries and on all continents but Antarctica. [1] More than 3 billion people live in regions of the world where rabies occurs. [1] A number of countries, including Australia and Japan, as well as much of Western Europe, do not have rabies among dogs. [12] [13] Many Pacific islands do not have rabies at all. [13] It is classified as a neglected tropical disease. [14] Signs and symptoms The period between infection and the first symptoms (incubation period) is typically 1–3 months in humans. [15] This period may be as short as four days or longer than six years, depending on the location and severity of the wound and the amount of virus introduced. [15] Initial symptoms of rabies are often nonspecific such as fever and headache. [15] As rabies progresses and causes inflammation of the brain and meninges, symptoms can include slight or partial paralysis, anxiety, insomnia, confusion, agitation, abnormal behavior, paranoia, terror, and hallucinations. [5] [15] The person may also have fear of water. [1] The symptoms eventually progress to delirium, and coma. [5] [15] Death usually occurs 2 to 10 days after first symptoms. Survival is almost unknown once symptoms have presented, even with intensive care. [15] [16] Fear of water Hydrophobia ("fear of water") is the historic name for rabies. [17] It refers to a set of symptoms in the later stages of an infection in which the person has difficulty swallowing, shows panic when presented with liquids to drink, and cannot quench their thirst. Any mammal infected with the virus may demonstrate hydrophobia. [18] Saliva production is greatly increased, and attempts to drink, or even the intention or suggestion of drinking, may cause excruciatingly painful spasms of the muscles in the throat and larynx. This can be attributed to the fact that the virus multiplies and assimilates in the salivary glands of the infected animal with the effect of further transmission through biting. The ability to transmit the virus would decrease significantly if the infected individual could swallow saliva and water. [19] Hydrophobia is commonly associated with furious rabies, which affects 80% of rabies-infected people. The remaining 20% may experience a paralytic form of rabies that is marked by muscle weakness, loss of sensation, and paralysis; this form of rabies does not usually cause fear of water. [18] Cause Rendering of the rabies virus Rabies is caused by a number of lyssaviruses including the rabies virus and Australian bat lyssavirus. [3] Duvenhage lyssavirus may cause a rabies-like infection. [20] The rabies virus is the type species of the Lyssavirus genus, in the family Rhabdoviridae, order Mononegavirales. Lyssavirions have helical symmetry, with a length of about 180 nm and a cross-section of about 75 nm. [21] These virions are enveloped and have a single-stranded RNA genome with negative sense. The genetic information is packed as a ribonucleoprotein complex in which RNA is tightly bound by the viral nucleoprotein. The RNA genome of the virus encodes five genes whose order is highly conserved: nucleoprotein (N), phosphoprotein (P), matrix protein (M), glycoprotein (G), and the viral RNA polymerase (L). [22] Once within a muscle or nerve cell, the virus undergoes replication. The trimeric spikes on the exterior of the membrane of the virus interact with a specific cell receptor, the most likely one being the acetylcholine receptor. The cellular membrane pinches in a procession known as pinocytosis and allows entry of the virus into the cell by way of an endosome. The virus then uses the acidic environment, which is necessary, of that endosome and binds to its membrane simultaneously, releasing its five proteins and single strand RNA into the cytoplasm. [23] The L protein then transcribes five mRNA strands and a positive strand of RNA all from the original negative strand RNA using free nucleotides in the cytoplasm. These five mRNA strands are then translated into their corresponding proteins (P, L, N, G and M proteins) at free ribosomes in the cytoplasm. Some proteins require post-translative modifications. For example, the G protein travels through the rough endoplasmic reticulum, where it undergoes further folding, and is then transported to the Golgi apparatus, where a sugar group is added to it ( glycosylation). [23] When there are enough viral proteins, the viral polymerase will begin to synthesize new negative strands of RNA from the template of the positive strand RNA. These negative strands will then form complexes with the N, P, L and M proteins and then travel to the inner membrane of the cell, where a G protein has embedded itself in the membrane. The G protein then coils around the N-P-L-M complex of proteins taking some of the host cell membrane with it, which will form the new outer envelope of the virus particle. The virus then buds from the cell. [23] From the point of entry, the virus is neurotropic, traveling along the neural pathways into the central nervous system. The virus usually first infects muscle cells close to the site of infection, where they are able to replicate without being 'noticed' by the host's immune system. Once enough virus has been replicated, they begin to bind to acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction. [24] The virus then travels through the nerve cell axon via retrograde transport, as its P protein interacts with dynein, a protein present in the cytoplasm of nerve cells. Once the virus reaches the cell body it travels rapidly to the central nervous system (CNS), replicating in motor neurons and eventually reaching the brain. [5] After the brain is infected, the virus travels centrifugally to the peripheral and autonomic nervous systems, eventually migrating to the salivary glands, where it is ready to be transmitted to the next host. [25]: 317 Transmission All warm-blooded species, including humans, may become infected with the rabies virus and develop symptoms. Birds were first artificially infected with rabies in 1884; however, infected birds are largely, if not wholly, asymptomatic, and recover. [26] Other bird species have been known to develop rabies antibodies, a sign of infection, after feeding on rabies-infected mammals. [27] [28] The virus has also adapted to grow in cells of cold-blooded vertebrates. [29] [30] Most animals can be infected by the virus and can transmit the disease to humans. Infected bats, [31] [32] monkeys, raccoons, foxes, skunks, cattle, wolves, coyotes, dogs, cats, and mongooses (normally either the small Asian mongoose or the yellow mongoose) [33] present the greatest risk to humans. Rabies may also spread through exposure to infected bears, domestic farm animals, groundhogs, weasels, and other wild carnivorans. However, lagomorphs, such as hares and rabbits, and small rodents such as chipmunks, gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, rats, and squirrels, are almost never found to be infected with rabies and are not known to transmit rabies to humans. [34] Bites from mice, rats, or squirrels rarely require rabies prevention because these rodents are typically killed by any encounter with a larger, rabid animal, and would, therefore, not be carriers. [35] The Virginia opossum is resistant but not immune to rabies. [36] The virus is usually present in the nerves and saliva of a symptomatic rabid animal. [37] [38] The route of infection is usually, but not always, by a bite. In many cases, the infected animal is exceptionally aggressive, may attack without provocation, and exhibits otherwise uncharacteristic behavior. [39] This is an example of a viral pathogen modifying the behavior of its host to facilitate its transmission to other hosts. Transmission between humans is extremely rare. A few cases have been recorded through transplant surgery. [40] The only well-documented cases of rabies caused by human-to-human transmission occurred among eight recipients of transplanted corneas and among three recipients of solid organs. [41] In addition to transmission from cornea and organ transplants, bite and non-bite exposures inflicted by infected humans could theoretically transmit rabies, but no such cases have been documented, since infected humans are usually hospitalized and necessary precautions taken. Casual contact, such as touching a person with rabies or contact with non-infectious fluid or tissue (urine, blood, feces) does not constitute an exposure and does not require post-exposure prophylaxis. Additionally, as the virus is present in sperm or vaginal secretions, spread through sex may be possible. [42] After a typical human infection by bite, the virus enters the peripheral nervous system. It then travels along the afferent nerves toward the central nervous system. [43] During this phase, the virus cannot be easily detected within the host, and vaccination may still confer cell-mediated immunity to prevent symptomatic rabies. When the virus reaches the brain, it rapidly causes encephalitis, the prodromal phase, which is the beginning of the symptoms. Once the patient becomes symptomatic, treatment is almost never effective and mortality is over 99%. Rabies may also inflame the spinal cord, producing transverse myelitis. [44] [45] Diagnosis Rabies can be difficult to diagnose because, in the early stages, it is easily confused with other diseases or with aggressiveness. [46] The reference method for diagnosing rabies is the fluorescent antibody test (FAT), an immunohistochemistry procedure, which is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). [47] The FAT relies on the ability of a detector molecule (usually fluorescein isothiocyanate) coupled with a rabies-specific antibody, forming a conjugate, to bind to and allow the visualisation of rabies antigen using fluorescent microscopy techniques. Microscopic analysis of samples is the only direct method that allows for the identification of rabies virus-specific antigen in a short time and at a reduced cost, irrespective of geographical origin and status of the host. It has to be regarded as the first step in diagnostic procedures for all laboratories. Autolysed samples can, however, reduce the sensitivity and specificity of the FAT. [48] The RT PCR assays proved to be a sensitive and specific tool for routine diagnostic purposes, [49] particularly in decomposed samples [50] or archival specimens. [51] The diagnosis can be reliably made from brain samples taken after death. The diagnosis can also be made from saliva, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid samples, but this is not as sensitive or reliable as brain samples. [48] Cerebral inclusion bodies called Negri bodies are 100% diagnostic for rabies infection but are found in only about 80% of cases. [21] If possible, the animal from which the bite was received should also be examined for rabies. [52] Some light microscopy techniques may also be used to diagnose rabies at a tenth of the cost of traditional fluorescence microscopy techniques, allowing identification of the disease in less-developed countries. [53] A test for rabies, known as LN34, is easier to run on a dead animal's brain and might help determine who does and does not need post-exposure prevention. [54] The test was developed by the CDC in 2018. [54] Differential diagnosis The differential diagnosis in a case of suspected human rabies may initially include any cause of encephalitis, in particular infection with viruses such as herpesviruses, enteroviruses, and arboviruses such as West Nile virus. The most important viruses to rule out are herpes simplex virus type one, varicella zoster virus, and (less commonly) enteroviruses, including coxsackieviruses, echoviruses, polioviruses, and human enteroviruses 68 to 71. [55] New causes of viral encephalitis are also possible, as was evidenced by the 1999 outbreak in Malaysia of 300 cases of encephalitis with a mortality rate of 40% caused by Nipah virus, a newly recognized paramyxovirus. [56] Likewise, well-known viruses may be introduced into new locales, as is illustrated by the outbreak of encephalitis due to West Nile virus in the eastern United States. [57] Epidemiologic factors, such as season, geographic location, and the patient's age, travel history, and possible exposure to bites, rodents, and ticks, may help direct the diagnosis. Prevention Almost all human cases of rabies were fatal until a vaccine was developed in 1885 by Louis Pasteur and Émile Roux. Their original vaccine was harvested from infected rabbits, from which the virus in the nerve tissue was weakened by allowing it to dry for five to ten days. [58] Similar nerve tissue-derived vaccines are still used in some countries, as they are much cheaper than modern cell culture vaccines. [59] The human diploid cell rabies vaccine was started in 1967. Less expensive purified chicken embryo cell vaccine and purified vero cell rabies vaccine are now available. [52] A recombinant vaccine called V-RG has been used in Belgium, France, Germany, and the United States to prevent outbreaks of rabies in undomesticated animals. [60] Immunization before exposure has been used in both human and nonhuman populations, where, as in many jurisdictions, domesticated animals are required to be vaccinated. [61] The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Communicable Disease Surveillance 2007 Annual Report states the following can help reduce the risk of contracting rabies: [62] Vaccinating dogs, cats, and ferrets against rabies Keeping pets under supervision Not handling wild animals or strays Contacting an animal control officer upon observing a wild animal or a stray, especially if the animal is acting strangely If bitten by an animal, washing the wound with soap and water for 10 to 15 minutes and contacting a healthcare provider to determine if post-exposure prophylaxis is required 28 September is World Rabies Day, which promotes the information, prevention, and elimination of the disease. [63] Vaccinating other animals In Asia and in parts of the Americas and Africa, dogs remain the principal host. Mandatory vaccination of animals is less effective in rural areas. Especially in developing countries, pets may not be privately kept and their destruction may be unacceptable. Oral vaccines can be safely distributed in baits, a practice that has successfully reduced rabies in rural areas of Canada, France, and the United States. In Montreal, Quebec, Canada, baits are successfully used on raccoons in the Mount-Royal Park area. Vaccination campaigns may be expensive, and cost-benefit analysis suggests baits may be a cost-effective method of control. [64] In Ontario, a dramatic drop in rabies was recorded when an aerial bait-vaccination campaign was launched. [65] The number of recorded human deaths from rabies in the United States has dropped from 100 or more annually in the early 20th century to one or two per year due to widespread vaccination of domestic dogs and cats and the development of human vaccines and immunoglobulin treatments. Most deaths now result from bat bites, which may go unnoticed by the victim and hence untreated. [66] Treatment After exposure Treatment after exposure can prevent the disease if given within 10 days. The rabies vaccine is 100% effective if given early, and still has a chance of success if delivery is delayed. [21] [23] [67] Every year, more than 15 million people get vaccination after potential exposure. While this works well, the cost is significant. [68] In the US it is recommended people receive one dose of human rabies immunoglobulin (HRIG) and four doses of rabies vaccine over a 14-day period. [69] HRIG is expensive and makes up most of the cost of post exposure treatment, ranging as high as several thousand dollars. [70] As much as possible of this dose should be injected around the bites, with the remainder being given by deep intramuscular injection at a site distant from the vaccination site. [23] People who have previously been vaccinated against rabies do not need to receive the immunoglobulin, only the postexposure vaccinations on days 0 and 3. [71] The side effects of modern cell-based vaccines are similar to flu shots. The old nerve-tissue-based vaccination required multiple injections into the abdomen with a large needle but is inexpensive. [52] It is being phased out and replaced by affordable World Health Organization intradermal-vaccination regimens. [52] Intramuscular vaccination should be given into the deltoid, not the gluteal area, which has been associated with vaccination failure due to injection into fat rather than muscle. In children less than a year old, the lateral thigh is recommended. [72] Thoroughly washing the wound as soon as possible with soap and water for approximately five minutes is effective in reducing the number of viral particles. [73] Povidone-iodine or alcohol is then recommended to reduce the virus further. [74] Awakening to find a bat in the room, or finding a bat in the room of a previously unattended child or mentally disabled or intoxicated person, is an indication for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). The recommendation for the precautionary use of PEP in bat encounters where no contact is recognized has been questioned in the medical literature, based on a cost–benefit analysis. [75] However, a 2002 study has supported the protocol of precautionary administering of PEP where a child or mentally compromised individual has been alone with a bat, especially in sleep areas, where a bite or exposure may occur with the victim being unaware. [76] After onset A treatment known as the Milwaukee protocol, which involves putting a person into a chemically induced coma and using antiviral medications, has been proposed but subsequently found not to be useful. [77] It initially came into use in 2003, following Jeanna Giese, a teenager from Wisconsin, becoming the first person known to have survived rabies without preventive treatments before symptom onset. [78] [79] She, however, already had antibodies against rabies when she initially arrived at hospital. [77] While this treatment has been tried multiple times more, there have been no further cases of survival. [77] The protocol has since been assessed as an ineffective treatment with concerns related to the costs and ethics of its use. [77] [80] Prognosis Vaccination after exposure, PEP, is highly successful in preventing the disease. [67] In unvaccinated humans, rabies is almost always fatal after neurological symptoms have developed. [81] Epidemiology Deaths from rabies per million persons in 2012 0 1 2–4 5–9 10–17 18–69 Map of rabies-free countries and territories In 2010, an estimated 26, 000 people died from rabies, down from 54, 000 in 1990. [82] The majority of the deaths occurred in Asia and Africa. [81] As of 2015, India, followed by China (approximately 6, 000), and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (5, 600) had the most cases. [83] A 2015 collaboration between the World Health Organization, World Organization of Animal Health (OIE), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO), and Global Alliance for Rabies Control has a goal of eliminating deaths from rabies by 2030. [84] India India has the highest rate of human rabies in the world, primarily because of stray dogs, [85] whose number has greatly increased since a 2001 law forbade the killing of dogs. [86] Effective control and treatment of rabies in India is hindered by a form of mass hysteria known as puppy pregnancy syndrome (PPS). Dog bite victims with PPS, male as well as female, become convinced that puppies are growing inside them, and often seek help from faith healers rather than medical services. [87] An estimated 20, 000 people die every year from rabies in India, more than a third of the global total. [86] Australia The rabies virus survives in widespread, varied, rural animal reservoirs. Despite Australia's official rabies-free status, [88] Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV), discovered in 1996, is a strain of rabies prevalent in native bat populations. There have been three human cases of ABLV in Australia, all of them fatal. United States Rabies cases in humans and domestic animals — United States, 1938–2018 From 1960 to 2018, a total of 125 human rabies cases were reported in the United States; 36 (28%) were attributed to dog bites during international travel. [89] Among the 89 infections acquired in the United States, 62 (70%) were attributed to bats. [89] While canine-specific rabies does not circulate among dogs, about a hundred dogs become infected from other wildlife per year in the US. [90] [91] Rabies is common among wild animals in the United States. Bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes account for almost all reported cases (98% in 2009). Rabid bats are found in all 48 contiguous states. Other reservoirs are more limited geographically; for example, the raccoon rabies virus variant is only found in a relatively narrow band along the East Coast. Due to a high public awareness of the virus, efforts at vaccination of domestic animals and curtailment of feral populations, and availability of postexposure prophylaxis, incidence of rabies in humans is very rare. A total of 49 cases of the disease was reported in the country between 1995 and 2011; of these, 11 are thought to have been acquired abroad. Almost all domestically acquired cases are attributed to bat bites. [92] Europe Either no or very few cases of rabies are reported each year in Europe; cases are contracted both during travel and in Europe. [93] In Switzerland the disease was virtually eliminated after scientists placed chicken heads laced with live attenuated vaccine in the Swiss Alps. [65] The foxes of Switzerland, proven to be the main source of rabies in the country, ate the chicken heads and immunized themselves. [65] [94] Italy, after being declared rabies-free from 1997 to 2008, has witnessed a reemergence of the disease in wild animals in the Triveneto regions ( Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia), due to the spreading of an epidemic in the Balkans that also affected Austria. An extensive wild animal vaccination campaign eliminated the virus from Italy again, and it regained the rabies-free country status in 2013, the last reported case of rabies being reported in a red fox in early 2011. [95] [96] Great Britain has been free of rabies since the beginning of the twentieth century except for a rabies-like virus in a few Daubenton's bats; there has been one, fatal, case of transmission to a human. There have been four deaths from rabies, transmitted abroad by dog bite, since 2000. The last infection in the UK occurred in 1922, and the last death from indigenous rabies was in 1902. [97] [98] Unlike the other countries of Europe it is protected by being an island, and by strict quarantine procedures. Mexico Mexico was certified by the World Health Organization as free of dog-transmitted rabies in 2019, since no case of dog-human transmission has been recorded in two years. [99] History Rabies has been known since around 2000 BC. [100] The first written record of rabies is in the Mesopotamian Codex of Eshnunna (circa 1930 BC), which dictates that the owner of a dog showing symptoms of rabies should take preventive measure against bites. If another person were bitten by a rabid dog and later died, the owner was heavily fined. [101] Ineffective folk remedies abounded in the medical literature of the ancient world. The physician Scribonius Largus prescribed a poultice of cloth and hyena skin; Antaeus recommended a preparation made from the skull of a hanged man. [102] Rabies appears to have originated in the Old World, the first epizootic in the New World occurring in Boston in 1768. [103] It spread from there, over the next few years, to various other states, as well as to the French West Indies, eventually becoming common all across North America. Rabies was considered a scourge for its prevalence in the 19th century. In France and Belgium, where Saint Hubert was venerated, the " St Hubert's Key " was heated and applied to cauterize the wound. By an application of magical thinking, dogs were branded with the key in hopes of protecting them from rabies. The fear of rabies was almost irrational, due to the number of vectors (mostly rabid dogs) and the absence of any efficacious treatment. It was not uncommon for a person bitten by a dog merely suspected of being rabid to commit suicide or to be killed by others. [104] In ancient times the attachment of the tongue (the lingual frenulum, a mucous membrane) was cut and removed as this was where rabies was thought to originate. This practice ceased with the discovery of the actual cause of rabies. [25] Louis Pasteur's 1885 nerve tissue vaccine was successful, and was progressively improved to reduce often severe side-effects. [15] In modern times, the fear of rabies has not diminished, and the disease and its symptoms, particularly agitation, have served as an inspiration for several works of zombie or similarly-themed fiction, often portraying rabies as having mutated into a stronger virus which fills humans with murderous rage or incurable illness, bringing about a devastating, widespread pandemic. [105] Etymology The term is derived from the Latin rabies, "madness". [106] This, in turn, may be related to the Sanskrit rabhas, "to rage". [107] The Greeks derived the word lyssa, from lud or "violent"; this root is used in the genus name of the rabies virus, Lyssavirus. [104] Other animals Rabies is infectious to mammals; three stages of central nervous system infection are recognized. The first stage is a one- to three-day period characterized by behavioral changes and is known as the prodromal stage. The second is the excitative stage, which lasts three to four days. This stage is often known as "furious rabies" for the tendency of the affected animal to be hyper-reactive to external stimuli and bite at anything near. The third is the paralytic stage and is caused by damage to motor neurons. Incoordination is seen, owing to rear limb paralysis, and drooling and difficulty swallowing is caused by paralysis of facial and throat muscles. Death is usually caused by respiratory arrest. [108] Research The outer shell of the rabies virus, stripped of its RNA contents and thus unable to cause disease, may be used as a vector for the delivery of unrelated genetic material in a research setting. It has the advantage over other pseudotyping methods for gene delivery that the cell targeting ( tissue tropism) is more specific for the central nervous system, a difficult-to-reach site, obviating the need for invasive delivery methods. It is also capable of infecting neighboring "upstream" cells, moving from one cell to axons of the next at synapses, and is thus used for retrograde tracing in neuronal circuits. [109] Evidence indicates artificially increasing the permeability of the blood–brain barrier, which normally does not allow most immune cells across, promotes viral clearance. YouTube. “Hes bloody, what is he gonna do?” Idiot of 2019 😂🙄 bruh its rabid. Its gonna kill someone or some pet. If not already. Call the damn law. I LOVE the part when you went from amazement that a deer was circling in front of you in a parking lot until the split second you recognized he was foaming at the mouth and you ran like a little girl. Did you not maintain the vaccine. When he bit the zombie i died 😭😂. If you see a raccoon like this, call animal control. Proceeds recordings. Thanks a bunch for the help. Would have spent hours trying to find my way out of here without you! 👍👍👍✌️.

Remaking a movie by a guy who was talented enough to create one of the great all-time remakes is ballsy and almost bound to fail. Rabid is close to being a good remake but has too many issues for my liking.
The story: a beautiful fashion designer has a life-changing accident and is doomed to a future of ugliness, unless she undergoes an experimental operation which has unforseen side-effects for her and the city around her. br> It's a cool premise, as was with the original but the pacing is way off. It takes too long to get off the ground and then when it does, lacks focus and seems to be telling two distinct stories rather than one, whereas Cronenberg's movie has a much sharper narrative.
There are a few grisly scenes but not immensly eye-opening for something that really should have people squirming.
The lead actress is good and, on the whole, the acting is solid but let down in a few places by some support roles. The editing could be a lot slicker; some scenes just felt dragged out and irrelevant.
I think it's worth checking out if you like the original but I'd be surprised if many people hail this as a big success.

Edit Storyline In Camelford, while swinging his van across a narrow road to make a u-turn, a driver stalls the vehicle that does not restart. Hart Read is driving his motorcycle with his girlfriend Rose and he drives off the road to avoid the collision. Hart suffers minor injuries while Rosie is injured and burned by the flames when the motorcycle explodes. The ambulance from the nearby Keloid Clinic for Plastic Surgery brings the couple and Rose, who is in coma, is submitted to an emergency surgery and to an experimental plastic-surgery technique by Dr. Dan Keloid to retrieve her skin in the chest and abdomen. Hart is discharged but Rose stays in coma in the intensive care unit (ICU) to recover. Out of the blue, Rose awakens from her coma one month later and screams. A nurse helps her but is wounded by her and then he cannot remember what has happened. He is sent to a hospital in Montreal while Rose realizes that she needs to feed with blood. However her victims become zombie-like creatures. Rose... Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Plot Summary | Plot Synopsis Taglines: Pray it doesn't happen to you. Egy átlagos napom volt két éve. While many holocaust survivors openly express rage and uncontrolled bitterness towards their persecutors, other survivors display only an emotional deadness and a pervasive feeling of being alone and scared. In the movie "Fateless, Gyuri, a young man sent to Buchenwald, moves from a childlike innocence to world-weariness in the span of one year. When he comes home, he feels more alone than he did at the camp and even expresses a sort of homesickness for the camaraderie he felt. As a disfigured Holocaust survivor in Christian Petzold's "Phoenix, Nina Hoss' shattered look, repressed emotions, and shaky voice feel so natural that her gradual awakening to life epitomizes a Phoenix rising from the ashes.
Hungary's entry for Best International Feature Film at the 2019 Academy Awards, Barnabás Tóth's ( Camembert Rose" Those Who Remained (Akik maradtak) asks us to rethink our idea of what liberation meant to those just released from the camps. Based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Zsuzsa F. Varkonyi and set in Budapest between 1948 and 1953, the suffering of the Holocaust years are deeply etched on the face of Doctor Aládar (Aldo) Körner (Károly Hajduk, One Day. a slender, gaunt man of about forty who is going through the motions of his Ob-Gyn practice at a Budapest hospital, but the look in his eyes cannot hide the trauma of his wife's death and that of his two young boys.
Coming from the Israelite Community Orphanage, Klára (Abigél Szõke, X - The eXploited. a mature-looking 16-year-old girl, sees Dr. Körner, for a gynecological exam to find out why her puberty has come so late. At first, angry, fearful, and wound into a tight knot, when she reaches out and suddenly embraces the doctor, it is clear that she is seeking more than an exam but a respite from her desperate loneliness. Outspoken in her disdain for her classmates at school and her great-aunt Olgi (Mari Nagy, Budapest Noir" with whom she lives, Klára only begins to reveal her repressed humanity when Aldo responds to her like a fellow human being in pain, not a wounded animal.
Bringing the film to life with her tremendously affecting performance, Szõke refuses to return to Olgi even though she loves her and wants her to be happy. Instead, she moves in with Aldo who acts as a foster father, sharing custody with her aunt. He makes the rules, however, and is strict about physical contact, especially when she crawls into bed with him at night. Gradually, both open up though to each other. They talk about God, her parents, the sister she feels guilty about not being able to save from death, and, in a tender scene, he shares with her his photo album from before the war.
Though Aldo strictly adheres to the rules of propriety, their developing relationship raises some eyebrows, and the interest of Soviet operatives. Amidst talk of a Soviet crackdown on personal freedoms, Aldo and Klára do their best to be discreet, but it does not prevent others from gossiping. In one instance, after being seen in a park laying her head on Aldo's lap, Klára is defiant when interrogated by a Communist official. Similarly, Pista (Andor Lukáts, The Whiskey Bandit. Aldo's colleague at work, says that people have disappeared during the night and tells him that he has joined the Communist Party and has been asked to inform on him.
Those Who Remained is an intimate look at two damaged souls who have been bruised and shaken by life but are now ready to begin the reconstruction of their life, a process which will, in Percy Bysshe Shelley's phrase "lift the veil from the hidden beauty of the world." Knowing that any expression of the love they feel for each other will push the boundaries of what is considered acceptable, both realize that their protestations of innocence will not be enough to keep them safe, and that they must now reach out to others, bringing solace and joy in a world in dire need of both.

Hát baszki ők is éljenek Nekik is van életük. Hadd éljék Miért fárasszák emberek ezrei azon magukat hogy. véget vessenek a melegségnek. Ez olyan mintha a tetoválást akarnád eltüntetni. Vagy a szilikon mellet. El lehet. De örökre nyoma marad. Leurs états de santé.
